She's such a hateful woman(P. Pullman did a great job), but I think they really downplayed that in the movie, too. They really did make out that the church was the big enemy and in the books that was never the case.
By the way - have you checked out the Discworld fanart on DA?
Well, I agree with that. But I think they went out of their way to emphasise it in the movie, when the book didn't bother until Amber Spyglass. I think they made a bigger deal out of them and they un-greyed a lot of stuff. Although... as someone who knows the books very well, I have no idea what it's like being someone watching the movie for the first time. I sometimes found myself thinking 'Do people who haven't read the books even know what's going on...?' so I suppose it helped for non-reader audiences to simplify it that way.
Although I suppose it could be worse... I once found myself in Germany, watching it in German(no subs) for only the second time, having to explain what the heck was going on in Japanese XD Now THAT must have been confusing!
The film hasn't made much sense to my friends who adn't read the books but just enrages fans by missing out so much all or the disappointment from knowing the bits they got right (like most of the casting) won't go on to the rest of the trilogy.
I know the books really well as I wrote my university dissertation on them but can't imagine trying to explain it in multiple languages, hats off to you!
I'm studying games design from home now though.
